Professor Timothy Scherman will introduce you to Elizabeth Oakes Smith, one of the most well-recognized, widely published and eventually even notorious figures of the 19th century. Enjoy live readings derived from her diary. The presenter, Timothy Scherman, is the President of the Elizabeth Oakes Smith Society since its founding in 2006.

From the time of her emergence as a celebrity in the 1840s, Elizabeth Oakes Smith was one of the most well-recognized, widely published and eventually even notorious figures of the 19th century–perhaps most during her time in Patchogue, after her son Appleton was indicted for equipping a slave ship in 1861.
