Programs Offered

  • Here at the Ketcham Inn, we offer a variety of Educational Programs from children, young adult, to seniors. These programs are available to any social and civic organizations interested in historic preservation, restoration, local and Long Island history by appointment
  • All programs can be formatted to accommodate educational to social parties and gatherings

Adult Programs

  • Hearth cooking programs – Standing crusts, Breads, Soups, Boiled Puddings, (1600-1890)
  • Discover the food in artwork
  • Hand Crafts – Weaving, Basket Making, Primitive Rug Hooking, Painted Floor Cloths, Needle Felting, Wet Felting, Rug Braiding, Penny Rugs, Embroidery, Scherenschnitte (Papercutting), Floral Arranging (Formal, Informal), Broom Making, Leather Work, Wood Carving (Spoons)

Family Pop Ins

A once-a-month 2-hour hands-on experience, activity, or demonstration. Topics range from the c. 1693 hearth kitchen and its accessories to learning how to spot an antique chair. Blacksmithing, making wampum, brickmaking, and other activities are available.

  • Historic House tours and programs – Bell House, Havens Homestead, Ketcham Inn

Special Events for Children

  • Butterfly Day (age 2-5)
  • Peewee Powwow (age 2-5)
  • Tea for Two – Mommy (Dad) and Me, tea in the front parlor of the Ketcham Inn

Programs for Young Children

  • Early farm life in the hearth kitchen – 1693
  • Chicken egg gathering (Scrambled eggs)
  • Milk the cow, Dairy (Make butter)
  • Bread, Grain-mill, (Rolls in bake oven)
  • Apple juice (Fruit press)
  • Earth looms, Weaving

Programs for 10 years and older

  • Tin punching, Nutmeg grater, Colonial lamp cover
  • Feathers, Quills, Pens, and Ink making
  • Scrimshaw, Southshore whaling (Knots, life on board a ship)
  • Broom making
  • Sewing, sock holes, buttons – Embroidery
  • Spinning, Wool felting
  • Book – Paper marbling, story telling, making paper, parchment
  • Hand make games – Thaumatrope, checkers
  • Simple weaving, Baskets
  • Sights and Sounds – Gadgets and Gizmos
  • American Indian crafts and activities

School Programs

  • A day at the Inn – Tour, Hearth Cooking, Take home hand-crafted item
  • 4th grade Field Day – Prior booking is required, space is limited. Classes spend their time learning and interacting at individual hands-on stations at two of the historic parks. Historic interpreters at 8 different stations. This is a one-day program.
  • School tours for one class only. We tailor each visit to the grade and the curriculum.
  • Colonial Life – Indigenous peoples, Slavery on Long Island, and more
